Soulfully Crafted
Since 1899

The McRoskey’s opened their doors in San Francisco in 1899, making them one of America’s first mattress makers on the west coast.

In the late 1800’s, the brothers Edward and Leonard McRoskey moved from Chicago to San Francisco, intent on selling mattress manufacturing equipment. When they surprisingly discovered a lack of mattress manufacturers in the area, they jumped at the opportunity to provide handcrafted mattresses of enduring comfort and quality.

They established McRoskey Mattress Company in 1899, with a small factory in a rented space on Sutter Street. They moved to a showroom and factory on Harrison Street sometime before the Great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.

Because the neighborhood was miraculously spared from the inferno’s flames, McRoskey swiftly opened their doors and patiently catered to the never-ending queue of customers desperate to replace their incinerated beds.

According to family lore, the lines were around the corner for several months after the earthquake at the Harrison Street location. McRoskey worked around the clock to provide beds for those who lost their homes as the city began to rebuild and heal.

Continuing their quest for quality, on May 1st, 1931 Edward McRoskey disrupted the industry by filing his first patent for the McRoskey Tufting Machine.

His innovation allowed every mattress to be filled to the brim with even more comfort layers, which increased resiliency, conformity, and buoyancy. He later refined the process and invented a button threading machine that added buttons to mattress tufts.

Additionally, he improved tufting even further by inventing a hand tool to be used for tufting, eliminating the need for a long upholstery needle and increasing the springiness of the mattress.

Today, the foundational belief that the path to well-being begins with deep, peaceful sleep drives every action at McRoskey. We remain a very hands-on, fourth generation, family-owned company that has soulfully crafted itself from a small San Francisco workshop into an enduring symbol of authentic American luxury.
